Blackberry Winter — Chanel Chance Eau Fraîche Impression

Blackberry winter is a cold snap in May, arriving after the blackberry canes have flowered and long before there is any fruit on them. This is a fragrance about that week, not about berries. It opens sharp and cold — citron and green stem, wet and slightly bitter. The heart is water hyacinth and jasmine: aquatic, floral, faintly bruised, closer to cut greenery in cold water than to a garden in bloom. Teak, vetiver, and a soft amber-patchouli base give it a dry warmth underneath, the sun on your back while the air stays cold.

We chose Blackberry Winter because Chance Eau Fraîche does something structurally strange and lovely — it is a fresh fragrance built on a woody base, so it never evaporates into nothing the way most green citrus scents do. The teak underneath is what makes it wearable past noon. At extrait strength that base becomes far more prominent, giving the fragrance staying power well beyond the original and turning the drydown genuinely woody.
