Aventus isn't really one fragrance anymore. There's the original, the batches collectors chase, the anniversary bottle, and Absolu. We make four versions, and they aren't interchangeable. Here's how they differ and which one to buy.
Craggy Dome: the standard Aventus
Creed released Aventus in September 2010 as part of the house's 250th anniversary, and Olivier Creed has said Napoleon was the inspiration. It became the fragrance everyone else spent the next decade copying.
Craggy Dome is our take on it. Bergamot, lemon, and blackcurrant up top, pineapple and pink pepper in the heart, birch, patchouli, and musk underneath. Bright, then smoky. It sits in the middle of the other three, which is why it's the one to start with if you've never worn Aventus or you want the version people recognize across a room.
Smokemont: batch 13Z01
Aventus has been made in batches since 2010, and the batch code on the bottom of the bottle starts with the production year. Collectors have argued for years about which batches are best. Some read fruitier, some smokier, and plenty of longtime fans think newer bottles lost some of the smoke. 13Z01, from 2013, is the one that keeps coming up. Its reputation is balance: enough birch smoke to take the edge off the pineapple without turning to ash.
Smokemont is built around that batch. Pineapple, bergamot, blackcurrant, and apple open it. Then the birch arrives, dry and a little leathery, and settles into oakmoss, ambergris, musk, and a thin line of vanilla. It wears closer to the skin than the others. This is the one for anyone who has ever searched eBay for an old bottle.
Buffalo Mountain: the 10th Anniversary
In October 2020, Creed put Aventus in a matte black collector's bottle for its tenth birthday and sold it at the standard price. Creed's own line was that it was celebrating the original juice, not changing it. Plenty of wearers disagree and say the anniversary bottles smell brighter and greener. That argument isn't settling anytime soon.
What we can tell you is what Buffalo Mountain smells like, and it does not smell like Craggy Dome. Pineapple and blackcurrant come first and loud, with a cold green thread of juniper running underneath. The birch smoke stays in the background instead of carrying the whole thing. It dries down to oakmoss, ambergris, and a soft leathery musk. It's the loudest of the four in the first hour, and it belongs in daylight and warm weather.
Standing Indian: Absolu Aventus
Creed launched Absolu Aventus in the fall of 2023 as a limited edition in a 75 mL bottle. It swaps a lot of the brightness for grapefruit, ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom over patchouli and vetiver. It was supposed to be a one-time release. It has come back since.
Standing Indian is our impression of it, and it's the heaviest of the four. The pineapple is darker and jammier, and the spices hang on into the base instead of burning off with the top. It finishes smoky and mossy. Wear it in cold air and at night.
