Buffalo Mountain — Creed Aventus 10th Anniversary Impression

It opens loud and it opens green. Pineapple and blackcurrant arrive first — bright, almost tart, more fruit juice than fruit compote — and behind them a cold resinous thread of juniper and crushed evergreen, pine sap and cut stem. The first hour is the loudest hour. This one announces itself.

A word on what this is, because it matters: the 10th Anniversary is not the standard Aventus formula, whatever you may have read. Some enthusiasts insist the two are identical. To our nose they are not, and if you already wear Aventus you will hear the difference in the first thirty seconds — the fruit brighter and further forward, the smoke turned down to a background texture rather than the spine of the thing, and a green resinous line running from the opening straight through to the dry-down that the standard formula simply doesn't have. We would rather tell you that plainly now than have you open the bottle and feel misled.

As it settles, birch smoke rises without ever taking over, wrapped in rose and jasmine that keep the fruit from reading synthetic. The evergreen thread stays. Hours in, it lands on oakmoss, ambergris, and a soft leathered musk — drier and cleaner than an opening that bright would lead you to expect, with vanilla warming the edges rather than sweetening the center.

If you already own Craggy Dome, our impression of Aventus, this is not a replacement. It is the other half of a pair. Craggy Dome is the smoky one — darker, more grounded, the birch doing the heavy lifting. Buffalo Mountain is the bright one — fruit-forward, greener, sharper in projection, built for daylight and warm weather. October and July. Owning one does not make the other redundant.

This is the fragrance for the man who wants to be noticed at eleven in the morning.

The first hour projects hard — more assertive up front than the standard Aventus profile — before settling to an arm's length and staying legible on skin past eight hours. The green and resinous elements outlast the fruit. Spring and summer suit it best, though the base carries it year-round.
