Cardamom and calamus open it cool and green, with a rose just behind them. Jasmine, patchouli, cedar and labdanum warm the heart, and the base is where it lives: ambrette, orris, oud and sandalwood, musky and a little animal. Zoologist built the original around a musk deer in a wintry forest, and it suits a whitetail in the November woods just as well.

In 1913 Horace Kephart wrote that deer in the Southern mountains were "all but exterminated in most districts." By the 1940s Tennessee's whitetails were down to about 2,000 animals in a few East Tennessee counties. More than 9,000 deer were released between 1940 and 1985, and by 2005 the herd had grown to an estimated 900,000, in all 95 counties. When one bolts, the white underside of its tail goes up like a flag.
