White Thing — Nasomatto Fantômas Impression

Rubber and plastic open it, which is not a mistake. That accord sits alongside a milky-sweet melon note for the first few minutes and then gives way to smoke, gunpowder, caramel, and a sweet candy accord that shouldn't work next to any of it. The base is earthy — cashmeran, patchouli, and a soft tropical fruit note underneath. White Thing is the strangest fragrance in this collection and possibly the catalog. It smells synthetic on purpose, resolves into something unexpectedly powdery and refined, and is not a blind buy.

We chose White Thing for the creature nobody has ever gotten a clean look at. Reported through the West Virginia hills, mostly Kanawha and Boone counties: a pure white four-footed animal, bigger than a dog and short of a horse, with a scream like a woman in agony. The oldest written account came from a student collecting folklore in 1954 and reached print in Ruth Ann Musick's The Telltale Lilac Bush in 1965; the next morning a mare was found dead outside the barn, nearly stripped. The detail that stays with you shows up again and again — people describe being attacked, feeling themselves torn apart, and afterward finding no wound at all.
