Thunderhead Mountain

Saffron and cinnamon bark open it hot and dry, with a thread of immortelle that smells faintly of sun-dried hay. Then the plum arrives, dark and ripe, wrapped around camellia and a vein of oud. Benzoin, vanilla, fir balsam, and amber carry it the rest of the way. It's a storm cloud of a fragrance: heavy, sweet at the center, never quite settling down.
Thunderhead Mountain rises 5,527 feet on the Tennessee–North Carolina line in the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Appalachian Trail runs right across the top. The name comes from its weather. In the 1930s a Smokies guide named Sam Cook put it this way: "It'll be thunderin' and lightnin' on Thunderhead when it's clear on every other peak on top o' Smoky." One of the knobs on its summit ridge is called Rocky Top.
