Raven Mocker

Creamy sandalwood is the spine of it, warm and smooth. White incense runs through the middle, clean and mineral rather than smoky, and amber draws the whole thing out into a long, quiet trail. Raven Mocker is the calmest haint on the shelf, and that calm is the unsettling part.

We chose Raven Mocker for a story from Cherokee tradition. When someone in a settlement was sick or dying, the Raven Mocker came at night to take the life. It flew through the air in fiery shape, arms outstretched like wings, sparks trailing behind, with a cry like a raven when it dives. Unseen, it tormented the sick until they died, then took the heart and so added to its own life. The story belongs to the Cherokee people and was recorded by James Mooney in Myths of the Cherokee, published in 1900. The label carries a single black feather.
