It opens on smoke and shine, a black lacquer accord with a slick edge of vinyl. Makassar ebony and frankincense darken the heart, a dark peony glints through, and Atlas cedar keeps the base dry and steady. It smells like the sky going black in the west before a storm.
Rain crow is the old country name for the yellow-billed cuckoo, a bird people hear far more often than they see. Its guttural ka-ka-kow-kow-kowlp seems to come just before a late-evening thunderstorm, which is how it got the name, and in some places it's the storm crow. Nobody has ever proven it can call the rain, but Birds of the Carolinas allows there may be something to it: cuckoos time their nesting to bursts of prey, and those often coincide with rainy spells. It eats caterpillars, especially the hairy ones, and winters as far south as Argentina.
