Apple first, crisp and a little green, with bergamot and cardamom right behind it. Lavender, violet and geranium come in next, and they keep it from turning into dessert. Then vanilla and praline settle in over patchouli and guaiac wood, warm and sweet, and they stay a long time. Hamid Merati-Kashani made Layton for Parfums de Marly in 2016.
In the mountains it's mostly just coon, and one or a dozen, it's still coon. A speaker recorded in Little Cataloochee, North Carolina, in 1939 said they “just catched about three coon, two or three possum.” The Latin name calls it the washer, but it doesn't really wash its food. It rubs it with its front paws, often after feeling for it underwater, because wet paws feel more, and almost two-thirds of the sensory part of its brain is given over to touch. Near Chattanooga, TVA drilled a tunnel through the middle of Raccoon Mountain in the 1970s and built a power plant inside it, with a reservoir on top that holds about 12 billion gallons.
