Mahoosuc Notch

Saffron and juniper open it dry and a little cold, with grapefruit for snap. Raspberry and violet sit in the middle, more shadowy than sweet, and a smooth leather settles in over vetiver. It's a quiet leather, the kind someone notices an hour after you've walked past.

Mahoosuc Notch is a mile-long gorge in western Maine, choked with fallen boulders between granite cliffs, and the Appalachian Trail runs right through the bottom of it. Hikers climb over, under, and between the rocks, and plenty of thru-hikers call it the hardest mile on the whole trail. Even on bright sunny days it stays chilly down there, with pockets of snow and ice hiding between the boulders.
