Bell Witch — Penhaligon's The Revenge of Lady Blanche Impression

Powdery orris opens cool and dry, more mineral than floral, before narcissus and hyacinth build a green floral heart with a distinctly narcotic edge. Angelica and ginger flower add a faint bitterness underneath that keeps the sweetness in check, and a soft sandalwood base carries it out. Bell Witch is a green floral with something withheld in it — pretty at arm's length, less friendly up close. It wears cold rather than warm, and stays near the skin.

We chose Bell Witch for the most famous haunting in America. From 1817 to 1821 the Bell family of Adams, Tennessee said they were tormented by something invisible that could speak. It called itself Kate, after a living neighbor who had fallen out with John Bell over a land deal. Bell died in December 1820 after three years of a worsening affliction, and the family found a vial of dark liquid they didn't recognize. The voice claimed credit. Everyone tells the story about Andrew Jackson riding out to see it and leaving after one night; that part is legend, not record.
