Bergamot, lemon and mandarin open it bright, with a pinch of pink pepper. Then it heads for the herb garden: lavender, rosemary, sage and geranium, warmed with nutmeg. Sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli give it an earthy floor, so it reads clean without ever reading like soap.

Whistlepig is the groundhog, named for the high, sharp whistle it lets out to warn the rest of the colony. The name shows up in western North Carolina by 1917, and a 1904 account from East Tennessee has a local doctor rounding out the list of game with "turkle doves, 'possums, and whistlepigs." It's the largest member of the squirrel family and a true hibernator: over the winter its heart slows from about 80 beats a minute to 5.
