Mango, starfruit and bergamot open it bright and juicy, with violet leaf keeping a green edge on all that fruit. Ylang-ylang and frangipani turn it creamy and heady, with coconut and a salty-skin accord underneath, and vanilla, sandalwood and soft musk carry it out. It's warm and a little humid, like a summer afternoon down by the water.

Tree toad is the old American name for a tree frog, in use since the 1770s. The one in the Smokies is Cope's gray treefrog, and it's about as close as these hills come to a chameleon. Depending on the season and the humidity it runs from pearl gray to brown to green, most often gray with black blotches, and greenest in breeding season. It's an inch and a quarter to two inches long, lives up in the treetops and is heard far more than it's seen: a short, raspy trill from late March into October. When it jumps, it flashes apricot orange on the inside of its thighs. It'll lay eggs in a rain barrel or a swimming pool, and it can handle freezing weather thanks to glycerol in its blood.
