The Priest

Pineapple and grapefruit open it sharp and bright, more green than sweet, with bergamot keeping it clean. Cedar, patchouli, and a thread of jasmine give it backbone, and oakmoss and dry woods pull it down into something mossy and serious. Fruit up top, forest floor underneath.

The Priest is a 4,063-foot summit in the Blue Ridge of central Virginia, the tallest of a run of peaks that also includes The Cardinal and The Friar. The Appalachian Trail shelter near the top was finished in 1960, and it keeps a tradition no other shelter can match: hikers confess their sins in the logbook. Most of the confessions are small. Some aren't.
