Spruce Pine — Versace Crystal Noir Impression

Pepper, ginger, and cardamom open it hot and dry, a spice blast that surprises people expecting a pretty floral. Then the gardenia arrives, creamy and luminous, with peony and orange blossom softening the edges. The drydown is amber, sandalwood, and musk: warm, smooth, and close to the skin. The contrast is the point: spice up top, white flowers in the middle, dark amber underneath.
Antoine Lie built Crystal Noir for Versace in 2004 around a single gardenia set against warm amber. That's the version we made Spruce Pine from.
We named it for Spruce Pine in Mitchell County, a railroad town founded in 1907 that sits on top of some of the purest quartz on earth. The Spruce Pine mining district supplies most of the world's high-purity quartz, the crystal used to make the crucibles that grow silicon for computer chips and solar panels. If you're reading this on a phone, there's a good chance a little of Spruce Pine is in it. A crystal pulled from dark mountain rock seemed right for Crystal Noir.
