Vanilla, three ways, and none of them is a cupcake. It opens bright, turns darker and faintly leathery, and settles on skin with sandalwood and a powdery touch of orris. There's jasmine in it, but you'll read it as warmth more than flower. Underneath is a low animal note, the reason this smells like skin and not dessert.

Tom Ford added Vanilla Sex to the Private Blend line at the end of 2023. It stacks three vanillas: a bright CO2 extract, a vanilla tincture from India developed only for Tom Ford, and a darker absolute, with sandalwood and orris there to keep the sweetness in check. It won Fragrance of the Year in the Universal Luxury category at the 2024 Fragrance Foundation Awards. In some countries it's sold simply as Vanilla.

We named it for spoonwood, the old name for mountain laurel. Native Americans carved spoons from it, which is where the name comes from, and in the southern mountains a thicket of it gets so tangled that people call it a laurel hell. “Spoon,” it turns out, is also old slang for kissing and cuddling. We'll leave that there.
