Lakes of the Clouds

A burst of raspberry opens it bright and a little tart. Peony leads the heart, with magnolia, jasmine sambac, and a green edge of geranium, and the whole thing settles onto a soft musk. Louis Vuitton drew the original from the Chinese legend of the Four Beauties, and it wears like a silk scarf: smooth, polished, and lovely, with more reach than you'd expect.

The Lakes of the Clouds are two small alpine tarns at 5,032 feet, tucked into the saddle between Mount Monroe and Mount Washington in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The Appalachian Mountain Club built a hut beside them in 1915, and it's still the highest in the system. When the weather rolls over Washington, the lakes sit right inside the cloud.
