Bat Cave — Penhaligon's Terrible Teddy Impression

Incense opens it, dry and smoky, like a struck match in an old church. Leather comes in underneath — smooth rather than rough — and ambroxan and vetiver take it into a warm, mineral finish. Three or four ideas, done well, and nothing extra.

Quentin Bisch created Terrible Teddy for Penhaligon's Portraits collection in 2019. Bat Cave takes its name from a cave on Bluerock Mountain — the largest known granite fissure cave in North America, now protected for endangered bats.
