Cornstalks cut and stood together in the field to dry, a cone of them, going gold in October. That is the smell: dry stalk, dust, sweetness turning to hay. The opening is honey and tobacco, thick and almost syrupy, the sweetest thing in the collection. It dries down fast into hay and iris — dusty, powdery, sun-warmed — with a rose so faint it registers as softness rather than flower. Amber, sandalwood, and a thread of incense hold the base, warm and dry and slightly resinous, never sticky.

We chose Fodder Shock because Chergui is a hay fragrance, and hay is what a fodder shock is. The connection was too direct to ignore. What makes the original remarkable is the way the honey never becomes cloying — the tobacco and iris pull it dry almost as soon as it sweetens. At extrait strength the honey gains body and the amber base becomes noticeably deeper, producing a fuller, longer-lasting version of the same dry sweetness.
