Brown Mountain Lights — Amouage Search Impression

Lemon, lime, and mandarin open with an almost electric brightness, sharp and acidic rather than sweet. That citrus doesn't last — within minutes it drops into elemi, black pepper, and a heavy dose of frankincense, and the whole composition turns smoky. Guaiac wood, vetiver, and cade oil finish it with a tarry, campfire quality that sits somewhere between resin and burnt wood. Brown Mountain Lights is a citrus-and-smoke fragrance with almost nothing in between, and the contrast is the entire appeal.

We chose Brown Mountain Lights for the honest version of the story. Lights appear over a ridge in Burke County, North Carolina, move, and go out. The first published account ran in 1913. The USGS investigated twice, and in 1922 a geologist named George Mansfield took a map and an alidade telescope up there and matched the lights to trains, car headlights, and brush fires. A modern research team traced nearly every photographed light to a man-made source. So they're probably headlights. People still drive out and park and wait, and that's the part worth naming a fragrance after.
