You won't find Imagination at a department store counter. Louis Vuitton sells it only on its own website and in select LV stores, and a 100 mL bottle costs $360.
People pay it anyway. On Parfumo, Imagination ranks No. 1 among men's perfumes, with more than 9,000 ratings behind it. On Fragrantica it holds a 4.53 out of 5 from more than 14,000 votes. This year Louis Vuitton even gave it a limited-edition bottle printed with an archival version of the Monogram, marking the pattern's 130th anniversary.
So what's in it? Citrus, a Chinese black tea, and one molecule used in a dose Louis Vuitton itself calls "over-generous."
What It Smells Like
Louis Vuitton names only three key notes: amber, black tea, and bergamot. The ingredient list on LV's own product page tells you more. Ceylon cinnamon bark oil is in there, and so is orange flower oil, which is neroli. Ginger fills out the heart.
The opening is bright bergamot and citrus, with ginger giving it a little fizz. Think lemon squeezed over cold ginger ale.
Then it softens. Neroli and a thread of cinnamon pull it toward clean skin and good soap. This is the stage that divides people. Fans call it effortless. Skeptics call it a nice hotel lobby.
The tea is what keeps it honest. Black tea is dry, a little smoky, and slightly bitter, and that edge stops all the citrus from sliding into dish soap. Take the tea out and you'd have a pleasant, forgettable cologne.
Under everything sits Ambrox, a molecule found in ambergris. It smells warm, clean, and faintly salty, like skin after a day outside. It's the reason Imagination hangs around longer than a citrus fragrance usually does.
Key notes: bergamot, citrus, ginger, cinnamon, neroli, Chinese black tea, Ambrox.
Five Years and One Molecule
Imagination came out in 2021. It's the work of Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, Louis Vuitton's master perfumer. He was born in Grasse, the French perfume town, into a family of perfumers, and joined Louis Vuitton's parent company in 2012 to create the house's first fragrances.
By Louis Vuitton's account, he started with Ambrox and spent five years building around it. The pairing was the point: warm amber set against dry black tea. LV calls that combination unprecedented.
The tea is a Chinese black tea extracted with CO2. In plain terms, pressurized carbon dioxide pulls the scent out of the leaf without cooking it, so it smells more like an open tin of loose tea than a stewed cup.
The 2026 Monogram bottle is a collector's edition of Imagination, and Louis Vuitton describes the scent inside in the same words.
When to Wear It
Louis Vuitton markets Imagination to men. Plenty of women wear it, and we list ours as unisex.
It's built for daytime and for rooms full of people: the office, a flight, Sunday lunch. It won't compete with anyone's cooking. It also won't turn heads at a bar, and that isn't its job.
Most people file it under summer. We think fall suits it better. Once the air cools, the cinnamon and tea come forward and the citrus reads crisp instead of loud.
Go easy on the trigger. Ambrox is sneaky: you stop smelling it on yourself long before the people around you do. Two or three sprays of an extrait is plenty.
Whiteside Cove, Our Impression
Whiteside Cove is our impression of Louis Vuitton Imagination, hand-blended at extrait strength in small batches. It follows the same shape: bright bergamot up top, ginger and cinnamon in the middle, black tea and Ambrox underneath.
It isn't Louis Vuitton's fragrance, and we won't pretend otherwise. It's a way to wear the tea-and-citrus idea every day without rationing a $360 bottle.
It comes in 15 mL for $29, 30 mL for $49, and a 5 mL travel spray for $19. Not sure tea on skin is your thing? Start with the 2 mL sample for $10.
Curious about the rest of Louis Vuitton's lineup? Our Louis Vuitton Impressions Sampler puts five of them, Imagination included, in 2 mL vials for $20. For the full rundown, read our Louis Vuitton guide.
Maison Appalachia is an independent fragrance house. Whiteside Cove is inspired by Louis Vuitton Imagination and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by Louis Vuitton.
