When someone in a settlement was sick or dying, the Raven Mocker came at night to take the life. It flew through the air in fiery shape, arms outstretched like wings, sparks trailing behind, with a cry like a raven when it dives. Unseen, it tormented the sick until they died, then took the heart and so added to its own life. The story belongs to the Cherokee people and was recorded by James Mooney in Myths of the Cherokee, published in 1900.
