Then the beeswax comes through, soft and a little honeyed, warmed with wood and spice. Labdanum, benzoin and patchouli give it a dark, resinous base. Moss Breches was one of the original Tom Ford Private Blends in 2007, and Tom Ford described it as a dark, mystical chypre built on beeswax absolute. It's old-school and grown-up, and there isn't much else like it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eWe named it for the black bear and the beehive he can't leave alone. The old mountain hive was the bee gum. Folks cut a two- or three-foot section of hollow black gum trunk, set it on a board, put a plank on top and let the bees move in. Black gum was the wood of choice because, as one old account puts it, it \"would not split.\" After a while mountain people called any beehive a gum, whatever it was made of. Up into the early 1900s, it was a rare mountain family that didn't keep bees. A black bear will tear a hive apart for what's inside: some honey, but mostly the brood, the bee larvae packed in the comb.
